American Airlines is Always on Sale

I have this rule when shopping at certain retailers, like QFC, Banana Republic, or Crate and Barrel. Never, EVER pay full price. There’s no reason to. Most grocery stores will put everything on sale at some point, so rotate your purchases and buy in bulk. Gap brands and Macy’s are horrible at charging full price. With a coupon and patience you can get most things for 20-50% off. Crate and Barrel and Williams-Sonoma will let you create a fake gift registry for your dog’s birthday next weekend and then send you a 10% off coupon to buy anything still on it.

picture of American Airlines gift cardWhile I like to think American Airlines is in a slightly better category than Old Navy or Macy’s, I don’t see any reason to leave money on the table. To continue my series this week on travel discounts at Costco, you can buy $300 American Airlines gift cards for only $270, a 10% discount. I know many long-time points hoarders know this, but it is surprising how many are still in the dark. Keep in mind that not all Costco locations sell them, and those that don’t might not even know what you’re talking about if you call. In the Seattle area, the only one I’m aware of that does is Costco #1, the original location on 4th Ave S.

You can’t use Visa or MasterCard at Costco stores, and although I have SPG and Hilton AmEx cards I like to take a different approach. Buy a pre-paid AmEx using your Chase Ink Bold at an office supply store so you can get 5X Ultimate Rewards points. Valued at 2 cents each, that’s like getting a 10% rebate on top of the 10% discount! In fact, do this for all of your Costco purchases so you can get a 10% rebate on this and the other deals I share with you this week. Consider using my link to sign up for the Ink Bold (I will be very grateful) or read more about it on my card comparison page.

Furthermore, combine the 10% savings on your gift card with a 5-10% discount by using publicly available group discount codes. American makes these pretty freely available, and most groups will publish them online. They are generally good for travel to a particularly destination from any origin during a particular date range.

Just do a search for something generic, like “Seattle American discount code” and check the results to find one that works for your travel plans. Actually, Seattle may not be the best choice because these can’t be used on codeshares, and most American Airlines flights to Seattle are actually operated by Alaska Airlines. Oh, well.

If you get stuck searching, you can check out this forum on FatWallet.com and a Google Docs spreadsheet created by one of the members to see codes that other people have already found. Please, contribute some of your own to help the community!

thanks for the great information. I hope I can use the codes for mrs to maintain my comped exp after my defense.

    • Scottrick

Happy to help! Certainly this is the only way I would be able to afford maintaining both 1K and EXP this year.

Here’s a useful tip for you, you can use your Visa or Mastercard at Costco.  You can order Costco cash cards from costco.com and the site allows you to use those two credit cards through the site.  Pretty sweet.

    • Scottrick

Yes, I’ve done that in the past with my friends in college. It’s a good way to avoid buying a Costco membership since they will let you in the door with just the card, and then you can pay for the remainder with an AmEx or debit card. However, you can’t buy AA gift cards online, and using a Visa or MC to buy a Costco gift card won’t get you the 5X Ultimate Rewards points you would receive for buying a prepaid AmEx at an office supply store.

You might not get 5x points, but if you need to reach a minimum spend, it could help.

I’ve never actually used AA giftcards…can you use multiple giftcards per ticket/person, or just 1 per itinerary?

Also, for the discount codes, are they good for all fareclasses, and methods of payment, incl. giftcards?

    Thanks!

    • Scottrick

Good question. I’ve only had one I received as an actual gift. I just bought one and will buy more, but I haven’t tried to use more than one at a time. I would guess that you can since $300 won’t get you very far these days. You probably credit one at a time and the bill keeps going lower as it updates.

Hello, is there a reason to use the Amex card from Office Depot as apposed to the Vanilla Mastercard? I find that more places take the MC than the Amex. Thanks!!

    • Scottrick

      Costco won’t take the MC.

Don’t certain Costco memberships give you an annual dividend check? How does that compare to the 5x OD trick?

    • David

This is for the Executive membership, and it costs 2X ($110). This is actually the best deal b/c if your 2% reward doesn’t beat the price difference from the standard membership ($55), they will give you a credit upon renewal for the difference. However, I’m not sure if giftcards are qualifying purchases for the 2% reward.

Can we use AA gift cards while making a reservation with sites like travelocity or it has to be direct through AA

    • Scottrick

No, you must use cards through AA.com (and you can use up to eight at once). You also must redeem them for itineraries that are completely AA-operated, so no Alaska codeshares or stuff like that.

Where I am in Seattle, all flights to SFO and LAX are operated by Alaska, so I would have to do something like book one ticket to SFO/LAX the normal way and then a second ticket from SFO/LAX to my destination using the gift card. Fortunately AA does operate flights to MIA and DFW, so that helps if I’m going to South America or Europe. Play around with the routing options.

Sorry, no. But you should be able to search for them with Google.
