Should I Really Go for AA Executive Platinum?

I’m in a bit of a quandary as I near the end of 2012, and my mileage run post yesterday provided some background for my thinking process as I decide if it’s worth going for Executive Platinum status with American Airlines.

Some of you remember that American offered status matches to those at United with Premier 1K status. Then they said we only had to fly 55K miles to keep it instead of the full 100K. Great! Except that means a total of 155K miles required if I want to keep status with both carriers.

Tack on to that the roughly 20K I flew on an award trip to Asia that earned no credit toward elite status, and the fact I barely traveled during the summer while working on my dissertation. I am far behind.

During my mid-year status update, I reported that I was thinking of settling for Premier Platinum status with United, which requires only 75K miles. But I neglected a few trips I had already booked brining me far beyond that. Since I was close to 100K , it made sense to go ahead for Premier 1K, and I booked the last two runs I needed to make it happen.

My progress with American has been dismal. I have flown only 5K miles so far, and I have another 10K miles booked. That leaves me with 40,000 miles to go. My calendar in October is fully booked. November is nearly so. December is mostly open, but the last week and a half is blocked off for the holidays. In other words, I have about four weeks to fly 40K miles. And I have to do it cheaply.

The only way I see this working is with a few international runs, which tend to be more expensive. You’ll see domestic runs for 3 to 4 cents per mile (CPM), but each one takes a day or two and tends to earn under 6,000 miles. It’s a long slog. A good international run can earn 15,000 to 20,000 in just two days if you’re willing to pay slightly more.

Or I could skip EXP altogether this year

With the labor action and other bankruptcy uncertainties, this isn’t a bad idea. I was warning people at the beginning of the year against chasing American’s DEQM promos unless it was already their airline of choice.

Acquiring status with an airline that might change its loyalty program at any moment due to restructuring or a merger is a risky proposition.

My EXP status still runs through February of 2013. If I stopped pursuing it this year, I would have to requalify as quickly as possible during January and February, or at least get close. I would probably want to at reach Platinum status (50K miles) in those first two months to maintain some decent elite benefits after my EXP match expires.

I’d be interested to see what people have to say for or against trying to get this last-minute status with American. My judgment is complicated by the fact that American really doesn’t have a big presence in Seattle, so most of my “American” flights are really going to be operated by Alaska, which doesn’t extend upgrade benefits.

What do you think? Am I crazy to go for both? Or should crazy be my goal, as I take advantage of my current freedom from work and school to fly as much as humanly possible?

  • Deals we like

American will only downgrade you one status level if you don’t maintain the status. So if you do not maintain exp status they will only downgrade you to platinum so no need to earn gold status at the beginning of next year.

I’ve heard of soft landings with American. I guess I’m just not sure I’d get one as a status-matched customer (it’s not like I’m missing it by a just a little). It would be nice, but not something I want to rely on.

  • Seattlemocha

I am in a similar boat but will not earn 1k this year. Since UA has more flights out of SEA and to most of the destinations I go to, I see little need to status match. I also do not want to jeopardize my ability to maintain status with UA to go chasing after AA status when my travels barely reach 100k miles per year. Should my travels hit 150k+ miles per year then it might be worthwhile.

    • Scottrick

The main reason to status match was/is for the unrestricted eVIP upgrades. I still have 8 of those, which I can use for a trip to London next year, and maybe another one to Hawaii. We were already planning on doing that sometime early in the year, when it’s dark and dismal in Seattle.

I’m in the same boat. Called AA yesterday to see if they would lower to maybe 40k but would not but agent said look for a promo for you status match guys that took us up on the offer this summer…he said will probably be some sort of challenge early in the year. With that Iam going to wait and see.

    • Scottrick

I remember reading about a lower 40K target and also emailed AA. Got back a very polite but firm “no.” If there’s a new promo coming up next year, that’s good news. AA does seem to be picking up UA’s slack in the DEQM category, and I’ll actually be able to take advantage of that if I wait for next year (the 55K target requires no DEQM).

Earn those AA miles. No need to worry about losing your upgrades to Ben. :)

I will reiterate with @fb736c92f982de11647c222570522b0a:disqus said, do the terms of your match exclude soft landing? If not, I would think as of Feb you would be an AA Platinum.

    no.

    • Scottrick

I suppose you’re right. No elaboration is necessary. ;)

Short, sweet (or not), and to the point.

  • Ryan

+1 on the status soft landing.

Also, just a clarification, AA Gold status only requires 25k EQM, not 50k. Platinum status is reached at 50k EQM.

    • Scottrick

Good catch. I was three margaritas in when I wrote this!

  • Dad

You ask: “Am I crazy?” I answer: Some of the time. You could get a few miles taking Alaska to STS to visit me.

    • Scottrick

That is a $400+ ticket. Then again, it would save me a three-hour drive each way and a $150 rental.

  • Skwok

no. its a personal decision to get the status. For me, there are some good BOS-SEA day return trips in early december during the week and i have to take time off that month anyway. I just need 19k miles for plat.

At 3.5 CPM plus expenses you’ll spend at least $1,500. If your travel plans after February of next year might include some international travel on AA, then $1,500 to replace your expiring SWUs looks attractive.

If not, then save the money for your 2013 travel budget. With your ITA Matrix skills, I’m sure you will find some great places to travel to for $1,500.

    • Scottrick

Yup, I probably don’t value the SWUs that highly.

  • smitty06

I am one of the folks that received a status match.l I have heard no confirmation of a soft landing and I wouldnt really expect it as AA has been very generous already. I wish I knew American better so I could find some good mileage runs.

  • Biggles209

I also did the status match, but have flown nothing on AA since. It was initially very tempting, but then my target of 2 MM on United made me think again – I’m getting close, and perennial Platinum, with access to the xN awards, was the decider. 1K again for next year. SEA is also a factor – not much AA, declining UA, and I don’t like DL, so UA is the best of a bad lot.

    • Scottrick

Those are exactly my feelings about SEA. And since that’s where I’m stuck for now, UA makes sense. I would only want EXP for certain routes and the upgrades (at least I still have those from the match).

  • Gerald

If you want upgrades and your route is LAX-JFK, then Executive Platinum is not worth it. You stand a 50-50 chance of getting upgraded, best case. Times have changed. Save your money and buy a business class ticket.
