Red State, Blue State

We’re down to the final days before people will finally stop talking about who will win the presidential election. At that point they will instead talk about who lost the presidential election, and they’ll do that for about three years until campaigning starts for the next one. Is it any wonder I live as far as possible from the other Washington?

Silver remains by far the most popular choice for rental cars. But with a program like National’s Emerald Aisle, where you can pick your own car, it’s pretty easy to measure people’s preferences across all color options. National Car Rental put together this nifty graphic representing customers’ choice of either red or blue rental cars across the 50 states.

map of car color preference by state

I think the most interesting thing about these data is that the color preferences actually line up pretty well with political leanings. Even Washington, which some people think of as a liberal Democratic state, is relatively conservative outside Seattle. But while my first car was red, I didn’t buy it in the first place, and I don’t think I’ve ever rented either a blue or red car. Do any of you have color preferences when given the choice? Maybe if there were more purple cars we could encourage some bipartisanship…

    Well, other than Utah…

As for car rental colour choice, I go for a darker car (dark blue or black) /only/ after model and mileage.

More a car-rental company’s choice, not a renter’s. And that may be based on cheaper prices for a certain color from the car company.

Not really with National where renters choose their own car via Emerald Aisle – which is what this post refers to. So in this case it’s truly measuring customer preference.

Huge missed opportunity with linking “Silver remains most popular choice for rental cars” with Nate Silver’s fivethirtyeight blog ;)

Seems rather unlikely that renters would be presented with both blue and red cars that were otherwise identical, so as to accurately isolate their color preference. :)

We could go on and on about the statistical flaws in this study. I just try to get a Toyota or a Honda!

Utah is definitely NOT Blue in voting, I’m not sure Utah has ever voted Blue in a Presidential election.

I think in broad strokes, we see red in the middle and blue on the coasts. That’s all I meant.

One more Utah note, since National is ONLY available at the airport I doubt any locals are renting there.

Definitely one flaw in the analysis.
